Moonraker reservation study · October 6–20, 2026
Moonraker has substantial spare capacity.
Across 15 playing dates, Moonraker’s public booking system offered 325 of 477 court-hours (68.1%, rounded to 68%) in night-before or early-morning pre-opening checks. That is substantial capacity available to reserve in advance. The Board should evaluate this existing capacity before committing more money or courts at Del Mar.
The results
October 6–20, 2026: all three courts, all 15 planned dates and all 45 planned court-days, with all 477 scheduled court-hours observed. Percentages use pooled hours divided by gross operating capacity, rather than an average of daily percentages.
- Offered for reservation: 325 hours (68.1%).
- Assumed reserved for published drop-in: 78 hours (16.4%).
- Other unshown time: 74 hours (15.5%), reasons unknown.
- Combined unavailable: 152 hours (31.9%), the sum of assumed drop-in and other unshown time; unavailable time is not confirmed utilization.

Methods in brief
The overall results combine night-before checks with the October 19 early-morning, pre-opening check at approximately 4:47 a.m. PDT. All three courts were observed for every playing date. Availability can change before play; these figures do not measure attendance or confirmed bookings. A missing start may reflect a booking, hold, closure or staff block.
Night-before checks alone: 303 of 444 court-hours available (68.2%), covering 14 dates and 42 court-days. The October 19 night-before check is missing from this subset only. Its 33 hours are omitted, not counted as zero; the overall series includes the valid October 19 pre-opening observation.
The 78 assumed drop-in hours treat all three courts as reserved for each published block, a scope not independently confirmed, and remain in the gross denominator. This short October study does not establish actual use, peak-time or unmet demand, seasonal demand, or whether every player’s preferred time can be accommodated.
Capture protocol, hours and audit exclusions
For each selected snapshot, court identity, target date and fully loaded available-start links were checked to avoid stale prior-date times. One successful capture per court and playing date is used. One-hour, non-overlapping intervals are counted. Screenshots and original capture classifications are retained in the research record.
Service 19 identifies Court 1/provider 14, Court 2/provider 17 and Court 3/provider 18. Summer hours through October 31 are Friday–Wednesday, 8 am–7 pm (33 gross court-hours daily across three courts), and Thursday, 11 am–7 pm (24).
Published drop-in periods are Monday 2–4 pm and Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10 am–noon. No Thursday drop-in was verified. Actual drop-in attendance is unknown. Offered starts take priority; conflicts are flagged and never counted twice. There were no offered/drop-in conflicts in the selected observations.
October 5’s partial same-day observation, October 6’s preliminary afternoon observation and Labor Day screenshots are excluded from all totals. Failed captures are marked missing, never counted as zero. Collection concluded with the October 19 evening check for October 20. The October 19 early-morning observation retains its original same-day classification; it is not relabeled as night-before.
The website and current downloadable handout use 68%, rounded from the final 68.1% overall result.
Exact capture times for every date and court
Pacific timestamps include the PDT offset (UTC−07:00). The October 19 observations occurred before opening that same day; all others occurred the prior evening.

Related evidence notes
Aerial reference rings. The graphic shows homes at reference distances of 350, 800 and 1,000 feet from Del Mar’s courts for planning review. These are not measured acoustic contours or predicted sound levels. Terrain, barriers, weather and court activity affect sound; the rings establish neither equal effects at all homes nor a boundary beyond which noise stops.
Project cost. The FY2025–26 adopted budget allocates $10,000 for three permanent nets and $3,000 for a backboard. The $13,000 equipment figure excludes the separate court-stair replacement budget. Full conversion cost and actual expenditure have not been verified.
Historic tennis use. TSRA describes Moonraker as a pickleball-only facility today. Its historic landscape plan identifies Moonraker as Sea Ranch’s first recreation facility, originally designed with a tennis court. This does not imply a formal historic designation.
